History

Kai Ming, Inc. is a non-profit agency that was established in 1975.

Head Start is a federal program that was developed in 1965 to help break the cycle of poverty by providing young children of low income families a free comprehensive program to meet their emotional, social, health, nutritional, and educational needs. Head Start now serves over 900,000 children and families in all 50 states. Grants to operate Head Start programs are awarded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Kai Ming was established in 1975 to serve the Chinatown and North Beach communities.

In 2014, we successfully became a Head Start Grantee providing services to 300 children and families throughout our six preschool centers in Chinatown, North Beach, Financial District, Richmond and Sunset neighborhoods. Additional funds are received from the California Department of Education, First 5 San Francisco and San Francisco Office of Early Care and Education to extend the hours at many of our centers.
